Oreki Hotaro is minimalistic high school boy. One day, he joins the Classic Literature Club at his elder sister’s request. . . . .
There he meets Chitanda Eru, Fukube Satoshi, and Ibara Mayaka. Chitanda is a calm beautiful girl but she turns into an embodiment of curiosity once she says, “I’m interested in it (Watashi, Kininarimasu)”. Fukube is a smiling boy with a fantastic memory who calls himself a database. Ibara is a short girl and is strict with others and herself. She loves Fukube, but he always dodges her approaches.
They begin to investigate a case that occurred 33 years ago. Hints of the mystery are buried in an old collection of works of the former members of Classics Club. The collection is titled “Hyouka.”
The first episode is an introduction to three of the four main chracters. They are Oreki Hotaro, Fukube Satoshi and Chitanda Eru. Hotaro is a boy who doesn’t want to spend too much time on something (just like me and my school stuff ^_^ ). He joined the koten-bu (Classic Literature Club) because his siter told him to. Once he enters the club room he meets Chitanda Eru who is also a member of the club.
Later, Hotaro’s friend, Satoshi joins the club. They solved two mysteries in this episode. However, the second mystery was just a setup by Hotaro to divert the attention of Eru-chan from another story.
When I first saw this I found the character design to be similar to K-On. Then I noticed that the studio responsible for this is none other than KyoAni. Eru-chan is probably one of the cutest girls this season. I was really surprised when I found out that she and Ricchan share the same seiyuu. She joined the club for her own personal reasons which is unknown at this point. If you’ve watched Clannad you’ll notice the voice of Hotaro-san and Satoshi-san as they have the same seiyuu as Okazaki and Sunohara respectively. Hotaro looks like a lazy guy but actually he is very intelligent. Satoshi is a guy with a database for the most useless knowledge. Judging from some of his lines, he might add some comedy to the series.
The series does not rush the plot at all. They sure are taking their time with each mystery. Since this is a 21 episode series I will be enjoying this for two seasons （＾ｖ＾）.
It looks like the next episode will introduce us to the 4th and final member of the club. Maybe the main plot will start at episode three or four. Anyway, this episode was a great start to the series.
